Arts vs Crafts

I'm in different when it comes to this topic. There can be a difference between the two, arts being more heartfelt and meaningful or crafts just being fun and something you do when you have the time. But like you said, Mrs. Martin, some of your family members do it and sell them at craft shows. They probably make their "art" heartfelt and love doing it.

I think the word "craft" or craft making is just another word for "art". It just depends where you were from. Some states or cities may you use the word craft in-place or the word art.

But I will agree that crafts seem to be a little more "corny" then artwork.

Zine

Lately I've been wanting to start my own 'Zine with my photography, artwork (like my short cartoons/comics), articles of local bands (interviews, show fliers, etc.), my friends art, and just random articles. I was planning on doing this as a project for the AP class. I've started collecting some material to make the first release, I just need to go about making it at this point. As of right now I just made my tumblr for the zine, "Midwest Reverie", I haven't put too much on it yet but I will soon start updating it with more stuff that I will put into the first pressing.

Keep up to date with it:

Doubt

When it comes to art I'm always doubting myself and my work. Especially in situations like this class. Where this work is shown to the public no matter what and could potentially decide my fate when it comes to College. I have a hard with procrastination, I'm sure Mrs. Martin has noticed. And that also causes me to doubt myself.

I always think my work isn't good enough to get me to be noticed, or that I shouldn't even be an Artist. This is always running through my head. But when someone says my art piece is good or complements it in any way what-so-ever it really boosts my confidence in my art. Not to sound cocky or arrogant, but I'm sure it's like that with most of us Art Students.

I will always have doubts in myself and my art, but I know that if I really put all my heart into I can go somewhere with it.

Jon Mess

Lately I've been becoming more and more interested with art thats not Cartoons. I've been being drawn in by more "Abstract" artwork. I don't know if it's because I'm becoming older or more mature, I'm not entirely sure. But I'm finding out that I find that these paintings are more interesting.

I found out about Jon Mess through an Alternative Press magazine article which is a music magazine. I listen to his band, Dance Gavin Dance, and I had no idea that he was a freelance artist. Especially an Artist that uses oil paints and paints very abstract pieces. His painting just really draw me in, they're just so interesting to me. The colors that he uses, the amount of build up of the paint on the canvas, the way he puts the paint on the canvas.

This one of my favorites from his Etsy, where you can buy his paintings.  If i could have put all of my favorites on here I would. The reason why I love this one so much is the backstory idea that I get from the painting and the colors. The green and dark reds just make it look eerie and almost disturbing and I love that.

I highly recommend looking at his others ( I suggest: France, Donutgod, ActRad )

Graffiti

Graffiti has had a huge and obvious impact on history in America and throughout the world. Its impacted things from clothing companies to music, video games to movies, etc. Graffiti has been around for so long, it's hard to tell when it really started. Wikipedia said the earliest form of graffiti was seen in 30,000 BC.

Graffiti/street art has really impacted me as well. I have a huge interest in graffiti and the artists behind the pieces they do.

The fact that America can not except street art as ART is really confusing to me. I understand there are those people that ruin it and give graffiti a bad name by doing racist things with it or cruel things. But there is a lot of street art that is very artistic and beautiful.

I really wish the world would start to see that.

10.4.12

Going to take my (hopefully) final pinhole photo today at Springdale Cemetery. Hopefully it will turn out the way it looks in my head. I'll also be taking some other film pictures with the expired film Mrs. Martin gave to me. And also some videotaping, just for the heck of it.

Project II:

I'm ready to start this project, I just need to make a flawless pinhole camera. I have a lot of cool ideas for the self portrait.

Nick Messina was the artist that stood out the most to me. The way his photo's look just draw me in because there is so much going on, but yet they are almost calming in a strange way. The photos seem to tell a story, not just a regular "fairy-tale-story" but a creepy horror film concept. I could probably look at these photos all day.

I get a lot of inspiration from Nicks' work because it seems like something that I have the potential to accomplish with mine.
